Why our Library matters

Our church library has the awesome responsibility of serving as a steward of resources that strengthen and support our total church ministry.
The library is a system for conserving, storing, protecting, circulating, and promoting resources for the church and community. It is a support ministry of the church. It has the ability to enhance Sabbath School, pastoral counselling, Bible study, discipleship, mission and evangelism education, worship, fellowship, family relations, personal development, evangelism, ministry, and recreation. Specifically, it provides resources to help meet the needs of leaders, teachers, ministers, parents, adults, youth, children, and pre-schoolers – all ages in various situations.
The church library volunteers always seek to provide and maintain wholesome and biblically-based resources to encourage and enrich the growth of God’s people on the bold mission of Christian life and service.

Paul wrote to Timothy, “When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, also the books, and above all, the parchments.” 2 Timothy 4:13. Paul had need of books: how much more the growing Christian of today needs the stimulus of books for reference, for Bible study, for inspiration in Christian living!

Spurgeon wrote of Paul, “He was inspired, and yet he wants books! He has been preaching for thirty years, and yet he wants books! He has seen the Lord, and yet he wants books! He has a wider experience than most men do, and yet he wants books! He had been caught up into the very heaven, and had heard things that it was not lawful for a man to utter, and yet he wants books! He had written the major part of the New Testament, and yet he wants books!” (Barton: 100 Great Texts and Their Treatment, p. 111.)

The church library is a teaching tool, important to study for the individual, the class, and the congregation. The library supports the mission of the church as well as the growth of individual members’ faith. The Christian, in his study of the Bible, needs the information, discoveries, examples and distilled ideas found in books.

How can I contribute?

  • First and foremost, use the library for yourselves and your family.
  • Promote the library in your Sabbath School and in general conversation.
  • If you have read a book (whether you enjoyed it or not) you can help us by writing a brief book review. There is an easy-to-use one-page Book Review Template to download Here.
  • We are very keen to accept donations of books & DVDs for the library and for the evangelism table. (A donations box in in the Library Corner or library items may be given to the librarian or evangelism items to Dr Lionel Hartley)
  • Thank you in advance for any donations you may choose to make. We use the same general selection criteria as we use when purchasing books.
  • If a particular donated item is unsuitable for any reason, it will be donated to a charity or may used on the evangelism table in the foyer.
  • If you donate an item, it may take a little while for it to be catalogued (and/or recovered or repaired) before it appears on the shelves (The librarian has other responsibilities other than the library).
  • Where we have more than one copy of an item that is otherwise suitable for the library, additional copies will be used in the setting up of a branch library for location at a future church plant or donated to another SDA church library.
  • Almost every week the sermon is recorded and archived in the library. These are currently available for ordering (see Lionel Hartley or ask at the audio desk for information). We would like to record our sermons onto DVD and are seeking the support of individuals to form a team to be trained in the operation of professional TV cameras and digital recording equipment. Is anyone willing to volunteer?
  • When the complete computer system is properly installed, your church administration plans on creating an electronic archive of photos and documents relevant to our local church so that information on our history and progress is readily and freely available.
  • Once this project is underway you may be invited to bring in old photos and documents to lend to us for scanning and archiving.
  • (In the mean-time you may wish to loan items to Dr Hartley for scanning. These will be returned the following week)
  • We will still accept CD or DVD cases or even donations of DVDs or audio CDs that are unsuitable for the library as your librarian can re-use the packaging and discard the contents or donate it to a charity.
